Facebook

"Facebook is a popular free social networking platform that has the capabilities allowing users to create profiles, upload photo and videos, send messages", create posts to keep in touch with friends and family etc. (WhatIs, 1)

Facebook is offered in "37 different languages" (WhatIs, 1) and includes some extensive cool features that other competing social platforms don't have. These are:

  • Marketplace - allows members to post, read and respond to classified ads.
  • Groups - allows members who have common interests to find each other and interact.
  • Events  - allows members to publicize an event, invite guests and track who plans to attend.
  • Pages - allows members to create and promote a public page built around a specific topic.
  • Presence technology - allows members to see which contacts are online and chat.

Like the other competing social networking sites and applications, each one has a type of feed where the content you post, share and also where you can see your friends content. On Facebook, they call this feature "The Wall", and is basically an online bulletin board. "Messages left on a member's Wall can be text, video or photos" (WhatIs, 3).  Friends can come to your wall through your profile and leave or post these types of method of communication. This also works the same way for and you can do the exact same to others.

Unlike some other platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat, Facebook offers a very popular component such as "the virtual Photo Album. Photos can be uploaded from the desktop or directly from a smartphone camera. There is no limitation on quantity, but Facebook staff will remove inappropriate or copyrighted images" (WhatIs, 3).

What's great about Facebook is their Business portion to their platform and is a huge player in the social media business world. The platform is "one of the big movers in paid advertising" (Jeffbullas's Blog, 4). The platform has more than 1.19 billion users according to recent information. That alone is a good enough reason to create a business account, it's free! You want to make sure you make your account great the first time around, this is your image that everyone will see so you want to make it professional.

Just like every social platform that you decide to publicise on, you need to make sure your profile has all the right things in place before even trying to seek business and exposure. If these things aren't in place or done properly you might experience a lack of interaction.

Set your profile up for success, not failure. Provide all the necessary information about your business, opening hours, contact information, location, and call to action buttons. These are buttons that are placed at the top of your profile allowing visitors to quickly contact you via email, phone, or even a link to your website. This is an easy route for your potential customers, but also a professional effective way to feed business to yourself.

When this is completed you're ready to get advertising! What's amazing about Facebook is there very inexpensive ads, as compared to the more traditional print, television and radio adverts. Due to the shift in society, Facebook ads are way more targeted and accurate. With that being said, when utilizing advertisements on the platform, to be even more efficient there are components that allow you to target specific areas of interest.

With Facebooks Business Manager, this a fantastic tool that business individuals can use to access the ad center, change information about your business and also access the settings for who you want to target with the advertisements you create.

Being more specific with your targeted ads with location radiuses, demographics and interest will provide you with potential responses from people are in the market for services like yours. As a whole overview, Facebook is a great cheap and in some cases free depending way to grow your business on how you would like to use the platform. It's something I believe every business should take the plunge for as it only provides a minimum of professionalism, somewhere to post content and gain even more of a rapport with your customers hopefully bringing more business.
